DIRECTIONS FOR USE OF THE PETTIBON HEAD WEIGHTING SYSTERM
FRONTAL HEAD WEIGHTING IS UTILIZED FOR THE FOLLOWING:
1. Skull-atlas non-forward flexion and/ or over-extension correction.
2. Forward head posture correction.
3. Cervical Lordosis correction.
The proper amount of weight is calculated by visual examination and/or by lateral x-ray. Once this determination has been made, the weighing procedure begins by utilizing the determined weight, which can be tolerated for 20 minutes. Most common weight for the introductory period is 4-6 pounds, with more weight being added to patient’s toleration, until the total weight reaches the previously identified needs.
Because of weak muscles or recent injury, some patients do not initially tolerate needed weight. Should this occur, increase the length of time required so that the time-weight ratio is maintained. For instance, if 6 pounds of head weight is required to correct forward head posture but patient can only tolerate 2 pounds, then the patient should wear 2 pounds for 60 minutes.
CORRECTION, REHABILITATION AND MAINTENANCE
Temporary spinal correction may be accomplished in a few minutes; permanent correction takes a minimum of 90 days. For maximum result, 20 minutes of exercise utilizing the fully loaded head weights must be performed a minimum of twice a day for 90 days. The patient must commit to the exercises to equalize the cervical flexor and extensor muscles and increase their strength and endurance. This insures the correction of spinal form and function. After the 90-day corrective-rehabilitative care is complete, the patient will be able to maintain muscle strength and endurance and the cervical Lordosis corrections with one weekly, fully-weighted 20-minute exercise session.
